What's the difference between Mixed Media pads and Yupo pads, and how do I choose the right one?

Great question! Mixed Media pads feature heavyweight, textured paper (usually 200–300 gsm) that handles both wet and dry media like watercolor, acrylic, pastels, and ink without buckling or bleeding. Yupo pads are made of ultra-smooth, non-absorbent synthetic paper that lets colors sit on the surface for unique blending and special effects, especially great for alcohol inks and watercolors. Choose Mixed Media pads for versatility and a traditional paper feel, and Yupo pads if you want to explore vibrant layers, lifting techniques, or more experimental styles.

Which pad is best for travel or on-the-go sketching?

If portability is your priority, consider the Mixed Media Journals for their sturdy bound format and the Mini Yupo Loose Sheets, which are small and easy to carry. Both options fit easily into a bag or backpack and allow you to sketch or paint anywhere without sacrificing paper quality. The spiral binding in Mixed Media Spiral pads also makes it simple to flip pages and work comfortably outside the studio.

Do these pads work for water-based techniques like watercolor and ink?

Absolutely! Both Mixed Media and Yupo pads are designed to resist warping and bleeding, making them ideal for water-based art. Mixed Media pads have a cold-press texture that grabs and distributes water beautifully, while Yupo pads’ non-absorbent surface allows watercolors and inks to pool, blend, and lift in creative ways. Just make sure to let your work dry thoroughly, especially on Yupo, since it doesn’t absorb moisture the way traditional paper does.

Are the pages easy to remove for framing or sharing my art?

Yes, you can easily remove pages from most pads in this collection! Mixed Media Blocks have glued edges for buckle-free painting and release cleanly with a palette knife. Spiral Mixed Media pads offer easy tear-away pages, while Mini Yupo Loose Sheets are already separate. If framing or sharing your work is important, check the binding style—glued and spiral pads are super user-friendly for clean removal, while journals are best if you prefer to keep your art together.

Any tips for getting the most out of Mixed Media and Yupo pads?

Definitely! For Mixed Media pads, choose a heavier weight for more water or collage, and flatten warped pages under a stack of books when dry. On Yupo, you can lightly mist the surface for extra texture, tilt the pad for unique blending effects, and use archival glue for mixed media collage. Store all pads flat to prevent curling, and remember Yupo’s surface can be fully wiped clean for reworking or starting fresh. Experiment and have fun—these pads are built for creative play!

Pad Types Comparison

Pad Type	Surface	Best For
Mixed Media Spiral	200–300 gsm cold-press paper	Acrylic washes, collage, marker layers
Mixed Media Block	Heavy textured paper, glued one side	Studio experiments, heavy impasto, gesso
Yupo Synthetic Pad	Ultra-smooth polypropylene	Alcohol inks, watercolor effects, lifts
Mixed Media Journal	Textured, heavyweight bound sheets	Sketch studies, ink work, gouache mixes
Mini Yupo Loose Sheets	Small non-absorbent plastic pages	Quick tests, small ink or watercolor blooms

Choosing Your Pad

Match Weight to Method
• 300 gsm+ for heavy acrylics or collage; 200 gsm for light watercolor washes and markers.
Pick Your Texture
• Cold-press tooth grips pastels and pencils; Yupo’s slick surface lets inks bloom on top.
Evaluate Binding Style
• Spiral pads lie flat; blocks resist curling; loose sheets let you select exact sizes.
Consider Portability
• Journals for on-the-go; blocks or loose sheets for stable studio work.
Check Tear-Away Quality
• Look for clean perforations or micro-perfs to remove pages without rough edges.

Bonus Tips

Lightly mist Yupo before painting for subtle texture and better ink control.
Seal mixed media pages under weight after finishing to flatten any lifted fibers.
Use archival PVA glue for collage to avoid future yellowing or buckling.
Tilt your pad to guide fluid blends when working with inks or watery washes.
Store open pads flat to maintain perfect page alignment and prevent curling.
