Wood Carving Blocks

If you’re just starting out, we recommend basswood carving blocks. Basswood is extra soft, with an ultra-fine grain so your knife glides through easily—perfect for beginners. For more intricate details or relief carving as you gain skill, consider tupelo or butternut. Each species page at WoodArtSupply explains their specific advantages to help you pick confidently.

All our carving blocks arrive pre-surfaced, square, and ready for carving right out of the box—no jointing, planing, or sanding required! Simply unwrap your block, lay out your project, and start shaping. This means you can skip hours of lumber prep and jump straight into the fun part: carving.

It depends on what you want to carve! For small figurines or whittling, choose compact basswood or poplar blocks. Relief panels or utensils benefit from wider, flat-grained blanks. Each block listing includes dimensions and grain details—look for long-grain for carving strength, or select specialty blanks for spoons or inlays. Our product pages offer tips and charts to match the right block size and type to your project.
