What is a sublimation printer and how is it different from a regular printer?

A sublimation printer uses heat to transfer special dye-based inks directly into coated surfaces—like polyester fabric, ceramics, or metal—creating vibrant, high-resolution images that become part of the material. Unlike traditional inkjet or laser printers, sublimation printers don’t just sit ink on top of your items. Instead, the ink turns into a gas and fuses into the substrate, making your prints extra durable, crack- and fade-resistant, and able to withstand repeated washing or outdoor use. This process is ideal for making custom T-shirts, mugs, phone cases, photo gifts, and many other personalized items.

What kinds of items can I customize with a sublimation printer from WoodArtSupply?

Sublimation printers from our collection are designed to transfer vivid designs onto a wide range of coated products. You can personalize polyester apparel, mugs, aluminum panels, phone cases, coasters, puzzles, and more—basically, any item with a suitable polymer coating is a great candidate for sublimation.

How durable are the images printed with a sublimation printer compared to traditional methods?

Sublimation prints are exceptionally durable because the dye becomes part of the material rather than sitting on top. This means your images won’t crack, peel, or fade—even after multiple washes or exposure to sunlight. They’re a great choice for products that need to look sharp for a long time.

I’m new to sublimation. What’s the best type of printer for beginners or small businesses?

For beginners or small businesses, we recommend a desktop sublimation printer (around 8.5×11"). These compact models are affordable, easy to set up, and perfect for creating custom T-shirts, mugs, and small gifts. You can always upgrade to a larger or more specialized system as your needs grow.

Can I print on cotton or uncoated surfaces with your sublimation printers?

Sublimation requires a polyester or specially coated surface to work. These printers won’t bond with cotton or uncoated materials. For best results, use items labeled as ‘sublimation-ready’ or those with a compatible polymer coating available from WoodArtSupply.

How long does it take to set up and complete a sublimation print job?

With digital file printing, setup is quick—just load your design and substrate. Small runs or even single items can be ready in minutes, making sublimation printers efficient for both custom one-offs and batches. There’s no need for traditional screens or plates, so you can switch designs easily and process orders fast.
