Author: Iain Whittington is a retired army engineer who started woodworking as a life-long hobby under his father’s guidance in the family’s garage. Moving around the world with the army gave him opportunities to learn new skills, including decorative carving. As a specialist within the military – a Charted Land Surveyor with a Masters in Remote Sensing – he regularly wrote, presented and published technical articles in the civilian arena. When he retired from the military, with more time to devote to his life-long hobby of woodworking, it was a natural progression to move into writing about it. This has brought his previous experience of researching, writing and presenting professional articles (for the international community) to writing about a range of woodworking subjects, from tools to projects. This published work has covered designs from field gates and fruit cages to subjects as varied as chair restoration and sharpening machines. This has enabled him to become a regular contributor to GMC magazines and other woodworking titles for the past 20 years, writing on a variety of inter-related subjects, from carving to restoration - an experience that he has brought to the wide scope of material contained in the book.
