What’s the difference between cardstock and illustration board, and how do I choose the right one for my project?

Cardstock is a smooth, flexible paper that’s fantastic for sketches, marker art, card making, and light watercolor washes. It’s affordable and perfect for early-stage creative work or practicing new techniques. Illustration board is much heavier and rigid, providing a flat, archival-quality surface ideal for finished art, mixed media, and anything you might want to frame or display professionally. Choose cardstock for drafts and experiments or when you need something budget-friendly; opt for illustration board when you want a sturdy, lasting base for your best pieces.

Can I use markers, watercolor, or acrylics on both cardstock and illustration board?

Yes, both cardstock and illustration board work with a variety of art media, but each has its strengths. Cardstock is best for markers, pens, and light watercolor washes—it's smooth and lets colors blend nicely, but it shouldn't be overloaded with wet media. Illustration board can handle heavier applications, including gouache, acrylic, and layering with mixed media. For bold, wet work that requires surface stability and won’t buckle, illustration board is the top choice. For quick sketches or lightweight coloring, you’ll love how cardstock performs.

Is illustration board worth the investment compared to cardstock for beginners or students?

If you're focusing on practice, studies, or trying out new techniques, cardstock is usually the most cost-effective option. It's easy on the budget and forgiving for experimentation. Illustration board, while pricier, is ideal for pieces you’ll display, sell, or frame due to its archival quality and durable surface. Beginners can comfortably start with cardstock, but for special projects or professional results, investing in illustration board absolutely pays off.

How should I handle and store cardstock and illustration board to keep them in the best condition?

Handle both cardstock and illustration board with clean, dry hands to prevent fingerprints and smudges. Store them flat in a clean, dry space, ideally in a protective portfolio or box. Avoid bending cardstock to prevent creases, and keep illustration board stacked with sheets of clean paper or glassine between them to safeguard finished artwork. Keeping your surfaces dust-free and protected preserves their quality for both practice and portfolio-ready work.

What type of projects or creative techniques benefit most from cardstock vs. illustration board?

Cardstock shines for quick sketches, marker drawings, card making, invitations, and early idea exploration—it’s perfect when you want to create freely and often. Illustration board is ideal for finished artwork, mixed media collage, presentation pieces, or anything involving layering and potentially heavier paint or glue. If you’re planning to frame your work or need a rigid base for detailed compositions, illustration board is your go-to. For volume, experimentation, and practice, cardstock offers great value and versatility.
